Using TZO Dynamic DNS to remotely access your Linksys NAS200 Network Storage System over the Internet

Your Linksys NAS200 Network Storage system is a great way to expand your storage options for your home or small business network. The NAS200 not only offers storage locally on your network, but it also offers a WWW and FTP server for obtaining access to your files REMOTELY over the Internet.

This tutorial will show you how to signup with your free trial of the TZO Dynamic DNS service and configure your NAS200 and Linksys router to gain remote access to your NAS200.

*** Important: This tutorial assumes you have followed the NAS200 user guide and have already run through the setup wizard for the product. You should already have an IP address and should be able to log into the NAS200 using your web browser before you begin this tutorial***

Step 1) In order to properly use your NAS200 remotely via the Internet, we highly suggest you set the NAS200 to use a STATIC LAN IP ADDRESS on your LAN. Please follow this guide on SETTING A STATIC IP ADDRESS ON YOUR NAS200 or continue if you already have set a Static IP.

Step 2) Now that you have a Static IP address set on the NAS200 to 192.168.1.200, you are ready to signup with your FREE 1 YEAR of TZO.COM Dynamic DNS and perform your port forwarding on your router. Log into the NAS200 by going to http://192.168.1.200 and then clicking on the ADMINISTRATION LOGIN button as shown circled below.

Step 3) You will be prompted for your username and password as shown in the screenshot below. (The default username is blank and password is admin)

Step 4) You will be presented with the main Status Screen as shown below. Click on the SYSTEM OPTIONS link on the left menu as shown circled below:

Step 5) You will now be presented with the system options screen as shown below. Scroll down and click the DDNS link as shown circled in red below, this will bring you to the DDNS section of the system options.

Step 6) Signup with the FREE 1 YEAR trial of TZO.COM DDNS
Click the “SIGNUP FOR A TZO DDNS ACCOUNT” and your browser will launch to http://Linksys.tzo.com

STEP 7) You will now see a screen similar to the one below. Click on the NAS200 image and select NEXT.

STEP 8) You will now see a screen similar to the one below. Click on the "Yes, My Device is a NAS200 and select NEXT.

STEP 9) You will now see a screen similar to the one below. Click on the "I Would like to try TZO DDNS 1 Year for FREE" and select NEXT.

STEP 10) You will now see a screen similar to the one below that is asking for your NAS200 MAC Address on the bottom sticker of your NAS200. Enter the NAS200 MAC address of your device and select NEXT.

STEP 11) You will now see a screen similar to the one below. Enter your domain name selection for your Free year of TZO, and then select NEXT.

STEP 12) You will now be asked for your Email address in order to send you the account information. Enter your email address and continue to the next step.

STEP 13) Now that you have signed up with your TZO DDNS account, you should check your email. In your email you will find an email from TZO.COM (If you do not see the email, check your Bulk/Junk email folder to make sure this was not marked as Junk).

Open the email window and keep this email window open. Now go back to your browser and log back into the NAS200 and go back to the ADMINISTRATION area, click SYSTEM OPTIONS, and scroll down to the DDNS section of the device. You should now check the ENABLE TZO DDNS to make sure it's enabled as shown circled in the screenshot below. This should be CHECKED ON.

You should then enter the TZO Account information in the email from TZO into the NAS200 DDNS section. Enter your EMAIL ADDRESS, TZO KEY and DOMAIN NAME. It's very important that you type this information in EXACTLY as shown in your email.

Once you have entered the information properly and checked it for typo's, you can click the SAVE button as shown circled in red in the screenshot below.

This domain name is good for 1 Year for your use. After the 1 year the TZO Dynamic DNS service will expire. You can purchase the TZO standard Dynamic DNS service for this domain name at http://Linksys.tzo.com before it expires. When ordering, use the domain name and the same email address you used when signing up.

Now that you have enabled the TZO DDNS, your NAS200 will continually poll your network every 15 minutes and track the IP address of your router. Once the IP Address changes, the TZO DDNS will update your domain name with the new IP address. If you wish to reduce the default “Update Period” and check for WAN IP changes less frequently, you can reduce the interval to your liking.

** Note: Keep in mind that if you set this too high, your IP address may change and the device may not catch the IP address change until it reaches that time interval. The default setting of 15 minutes is recommended. **

Step 14) Your last step to configure the NAS200 for remote access is opening the ports required to gain access via your Web browser and FTP Client. By default, the NAS200 web server runs on port 80 TCP, and the FTP server requires port 20 and 21 TCP.

In this example, we show you how to open up port 80, 20 and 21 (TCP) on your most popular Linksys brand routers. If you have a different style of router and require assistance, we urge you to try http://PortForward.com or consult the manual that came with your router or call the manufactuter for assistance in opening these ports.

Opening ports in your Linksys router is very easy. You first need to log into your Linksys router by going to http://192.168.1.1 and using your username and password to log as shown in the screenshot below: (The Linksys default username and pw is blank/admin as shown below) (Blank means you enter nothing in the username field as shown)
